Gurkhas at Sittang Bridge: A Tale of Bravery and Tragedy (23 February 1942)

During the Burma Campaign of World War II, the Gurkhas displayed unmatched courage at the Battle of Sittang Bridge. From February 21 to 23, 1942, Gurkha regiments of the 17th Indian Division fought fiercely to hold back advancing Japanese forces, securing time for Allied troops to retreat safely across the Sittang River.

As the battle intensified, Allied command made the difficult decision to destroy the bridge on the night of February 22nd–23rd to prevent it from falling into Japanese hands. However, many Gurkha soldiers were still positioned on the eastern bank. The sudden demolition left hundreds stranded, forcing them to swim or construct makeshift rafts to cross the river under enemy fire. Many drowned or were captured, turning the engagement into one of the most tragic episodes of the Burma campaign.

Despite the heavy losses, the Gurkhas’ bravery and determination became legendary. Their sacrifice ensured that a large part of the Allied force could continue fighting in Burma.

Today, the Gurkha Brigade Association commemorates “Sittang Day” every year to honor those who fought and died at Sittang Bridge — a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and duty beyond measure.
सित्ताङ पुलका गोर्खा: वीरता र बलिदानको गाथा (१९ फेब्रुअरी १९४२) द्वितीय विश्वयुद्धको बर्मा अभियानका क्रममा गोर्खा सैनिकहरूले असाधारण साहस देखाएका थिए। फेब्रुअरी २१ देखि २३, १९४२ सम्म चलेको सित्ताङ पुलको युद्धमा १७औँ भारतीय डिभिजनअन्तर्गतका गोर्खा बटालियनहरूले जापानी फौजको अग्रसरतालाई रोकेर मित्र राष्ट्रका सेनालाई सुरक्षित रूपमा सित्ताङ नदी पार गर्न मद्दत गरे।

युद्ध उत्कर्षमा पुगेपछि फेब्रुअरी २२ र २३ को रातमा पुल जापानीहरूको हातमा नपरोस् भनेर आफैंले विस्फोट गरियो। तर त्यतिबेला धेरै गोर्खा सैनिकहरू अझै नदीको पूर्व किनारमा नै थिए। पुल विस्फोट भएपछि उनीहरू नदी पार गर्न बाध्य भए — कसैले पौडी खेलेर, कसैले अस्थायी डुंगा बनाउन बाध्य भए । धेरै जना डुबेर वा बन्दी भएर मृत्यु भए। यसले युद्धलाई दुःखद तर वीरतापूर्ण अध्यायमा परिणत गर्‍यो।

यो ठूलो क्षतिपछि पनि गोर्खा सैनिकहरूको साहस र दृढ संकल्प कहिल्यै कमजोर भएन। उनीहरूको बलिदानले मित्र राष्ट्रको ठूलो हिस्सा युद्ध जारी राख्न सक्षम बनायो।

आज पनि गोर्खा ब्रिगेड संघले “सित्ताङ दिवस” (Sittang Day) मनाउँछ — जसले सित्ताङ पुलमा प्राण अर्पण गरेका वीर गोर्खाहरूको सम्झना र गौरव स्थायी बनाएको छ।
